One Meal Around Thailand

Experience The Land of Smiles in one meal with Baan Ying’s take on iconic dishes from Thailand’s 4 main regions!

When you think about Thai cuisine, many things often come to mind, from its distinctive aroma and bold flavours, to the attention to detail and complex taste. Thai food is also known for its use of natural and medically beneficial ingredients in its delectable and aesthetically appealing dishes. Seven Thai dishes, namely Tom Yum Goong, Pad Thai, Som Tum, Massaman Curry, Thai Fried Rice and Mu Nam Tok, were even listed in the “World’s 50 Best Foods” list, generated from an online poll by CNN travel. This shows the global significance of Thai food.

In general, all Thai dishes originated from four regions: North, Central, North-East and South.  Each region has its own charm, and its dishes feature spices and flavours developed around its local ingredients.  Baan Ying is proud to present some of the distinctive dishes from these four regions in our menu!

Central Thai:  Food from Central Thailand is characterised by a combination of sweet, sour, spicy and salty flavours. This represents its abundance of natural resources, mainly from its rivers and fertile soil.  Food from this region is complex, and most of them are curries or prepared with coconut milk.  We recommend dishes such as Lhon Pla Kem (Salted Fish Dip), Gaeng Som Pae Sah (Fried Seabass in Tamarind Soup), Geang Tae Po Pla Kem (Salted Fish and Morning Glory in Coconut Milk Soup).

Northern Thai: Locals refer to Northern Thai food as ‘Lanna’ Food.  Lanna food is typically mild, and usually slightly salty and sour with little or no sweetness.  Any sweetness usually comes from local ingredients used such as vegetables or fish.  Some classic Northern Thai dishes are Nam Prik Tah Daeng (Red Chlli Paste), Gaeng Hang Leh (Pork Belly Curry), Khai Pam (Grilled Omelette).

Southern Thai: Thai Southern food is influenced by Thai, India, Malay and Javanese culinary cultures, prepared with a twist. The result is a wide range of curries made from just about anything with bold and spicy flavours, and lots of spices.  Because the southern part of Thailand is next to the ocean, the main produce used in its dishes often comes from the sea.  Our recommendations include Nam Prik Goong Seab (Dried shrimp chili dip), Gai Tom Kamin (Chicken in Turmeric Broth), Sator Pad Goong (Stir-fried Bitter Bean with Shrimp).

North Eastern Thai:  North Eastern Thai food is often known as ‘Isan’ food, which features salty, spicy and sour flavours.  The main source of saltiness in its food is Pha Ra (pickled fish), which is fish preserved in salt, a common way to ferment food during dry seasons. Locals in Isan like sticky rice as it gives them more energy and keeps them satiated longer.  Signature Esan dishes include Soup Makuer (Spicy Thai Eggplant Dip) and Som Tum Tad (Green Papaya Salad Platter with Side Dishes).
